NOLA Burner Camping Trip

I'd love to see the Burners from NOLA, Baton Rouge, etc, have a campout of our own.

To answer Anthony's questions from the other thread:

We'd need to get an idea of what the other regional "burns" are, at least the ones that NOLA/BR/Lafayette Burners are likely to attend, but honestly I'm just thinking let's do a camping trip someplace very cheap or free - where we can drink (openly) and burn stuff, preferably. If we go somewhere that already has infrastructure (read: toilets), we can just go for a weekend and have a good, stress-free time. it may be an "intimate" trip for the first go-round, but those can be the best. And hey, how many people showed up on the beach in San Francisco all those years ago to burn a dude made of wood?

I'm pretty new in these parts, though. Suggestions on campgrounds? Also, does anyone know the regionals and/or their dates around here?

I just had a look, and the Louisiana state park system does not have an outright ban on alcohol, it's at the specific park managers' discretion. They do, however, have a ban on amplified music (which perhaps we could work around, depending on how secluded we were) and say that "disorderly or boisterous conduct is prohibited." Bwahaha!

But seriously, this may be our best bet as far as cost is concerned.

there are a couple nudist camps in st. tamminy.. that being private camp grounds.. may be receptive to a burn camp...

just a thought.. no park rangers or police to deal with.. clothing optional would NOT be a problem..

Indian hills I have heard is a very nice place.. I don't know anything about la pines...

We are up for this!!! between mardi gras and easter would be perfect. count me in for like 4 or 5 people.

I really would like to bring my dog. I'm from Arkansas and that's a #1 rule for camping. Have a dog in the tent with you. But I'm cool if no one else wants suzy to come.

By the way Arkansas has tons of very beautiful camping spots, but might be too long of a drive. My sister lives near petit jean would would be about 10 hours from here.

Awesome, John, thanks for the sites! I was looking at some "gay friendly" camps, so it seems we're on the same page, hehe. I figured down here in the south especially that we "alternative lifestyle" types gotta stick together.

Becky - I've personally got no problem with dogs, and I'll keep that in mind when checking out campsites, but if we find a place that's perfect except for that one aspect, we may go with it. I think it would be best to keep this trip within a 4 hour drive - part of the reason I want to see this happen is there doesn't seem to be any trips that are less than an 8 hour drive for LA burners!

Anyone else got any input and/or interest?

Ok, so Indian Hills has a no booze/drugs policy, and nuts to that, I say. And unfortunately LA Pines is closed until "Spring 2009".

I just made contact with a campground called "The Compound" in the Florida panhandle, near a town called Emerald. It looks to be about a 3.5 hour drive from N.O. They seem pretty friendly, and one of the owners is supposed to give me a call back when he gets into town next week. It's "membership only" - a $10 fee per person - and $10 per person per night after that. Perhaps we could talk them down on that fee if there are enough of us. Altogether that would cost roughly $40 pp for the trip, but again we might be able to talk them down if we can get enough people to commit.

I'll need to quiz them about fire and booze when they call back next week. Here's their website, if anyone's interested in having a look (beware of cheesy "It's Raining Men" midi, ha!):

            www.thecompoundcampground.com/index.htm

We could do a campout to mark the beginning of spring, maybe, and make it the weekend of Friday, March 20 - Sunday, March 22 (spring starts March 20), and call it Springing Man. Har har!

            Thoughts, anyone?
